Meet Kathy La - the woman behind Law on a Gravel Road.
For Kathy, the gravel road isn’t a clever name or a backdrop for a photo.
It represents the rural communities where people know their neighbors, businesses are built on relationships, and an attorney can become far more than someone you call when you have a legal problem. They become a trusted advisor, community leader, advocate, and neighbor.
Kathy launched Law on a Gravel Road because she saw something happening across rural America that deserved more attention: communities are losing access to local attorneys.

And she knows firsthand just how much that matters.
This platform was created to tell the stories of rural attorneys, explore the realities of practicing law outside our largest cities, and bring together the people working to solve the growing rural attorney shortage.
But it’s also about changing the narrative.
Rural practice isn't where a legal career goes to slow down. It can be where an attorney builds an extraordinary career, creates a life, becomes part of a community, and leaves a legacy.

Because sometimes the best place to tell your story is exactly where it began.

When Kathy Law served as President of the Iowa State Bar Association, one issue consistently demanded her attention: Iowa’s rural lawyer shortage.
Across rural communities, the challenge isn’t simply having fewer attorneys. It’s what happens when people, families, businesses, farmers, and entire communities have less access to the legal services they need.
During her ISBA presidency, Kathy spent a significant amount of time focused on this growing challenge — listening to rural attorneys, talking with community leaders, and exploring what it would take to strengthen the pipeline of lawyers choosing to practice in rural Iowa.
But when her term as president ended, the issue didn’t.
In many ways, that work became the foundation for Law on a Gravel Road.
This platform gives Kathy the opportunity to continue a conversation she believes Iowa — and rural America — needs to have: How do we ensure that where someone lives doesn’t determine whether they have meaningful access to legal representation?
Through conversations with attorneys, law schools, policymakers and rural leaders, Law on a Gravel Road is digging deeper into the shortage, highlighting people working toward solutions and telling the stories of the communities experiencing it firsthand.
Because rural access to justice isn't just a legal-industry issue.
